Abstract

Background: Burnout poses serious risks to nurses’ well‑being and patient care. Understanding how personal and organizational factors shape burnout is essential for prevention. This study predicts nurse burnout based on psychological hardiness, organizational conditions, and job vitality, emphasizing emotion regulation as a key mediating mechanism. Materials and Methods: This correlational study included 383 nurses working in COVID‑19 wards in hospitals in Bandar Abbas, Iran. The samples were randomly selected from a population of 1,850 nurses. Data were collected via questionnaires on burnout, job vitality, psychological hardiness, organizational commitment, organizational climate, and emotion regulation. Data analysis was performed through path analysis via LISREL version 8.8. Results: Job vitality (t381= −4.72, p < 0.001) and emotion regulation (t381= −9.79, p < 0.001) significantly and negatively affected burnout. In contrast, psychological hardiness (t381= −0.15, p = 0.88), organizational commitment (t381 = 1.75, p = 0.08), and organizational climate (t381 = 0.48, p = 0.63) did not have a direct significant effect on burnout. The indirect effects indicated that psychological hardiness (t381 = 3.97, p < 0.001) and organizational commitment (t381 = 3.53, p < 0.001) influenced burnout through emotion regulation, while job vitality (t381 = 1.47, p = 0.14), and organizational climate (t381 = 1.09, p = 0.27) did not show significant indirect effects. Conclusions: Emotion regulation helps reduce nurses’ burnout during the COVID‑19 era, and job vitality supports psychological well‑being. Therefore, strengthening emotion regulation skills and increasing job vitality can serve as effective strategies to lessen burnout.
